Fakultas Peternakan (Faterna) Universitas Andalas didirikan tanggal 1 September 1963, atas ketetapan Menteri Perguruan Tinggi dan Ilmu Pengetahuan (PTIP) dengan Surat Keputusan No. 125 tanggal 9 Oktober 1963 yang ditetapkan di Jakarta tanggal 9 Oktober 1963.
Selama beberapa tahun sejak berdiri, pelaksanaan pendidikan Faterna Universitas Andalas dibina oleh Fakultas Pertanian, Fakultas Kedokteran dan Fakultas Ilmu Pasti dan Ilmu Alam Universitas Andalas. Di samping itu, peran Dinas Peternakan Sumatera Barat cukup besar terutama dalam menyediakan fasilitas, peralatan, tenaga pengajar dan tempat praktek. Pada tahun 1969 diangkat 1 orang dosen alumni FKH Institut Pertanian Bogor, 5 orang dosen alumni Fakultas Pertanian Unand dan 2 orang dosen alumni Fapet Institut Pertanian Bogor.
Faculty of the Animal husbandry was established in 1963. It consists of three departments:
1. Department of Animal Nutrition and Feed
The Department of Animal Nutrition and Feed prepares the students to become:
o Professional and skilled engineers with mastery of the science and technology of feeding (including preparation, evaluation, and feeding process of the animal). Therefore, they are able to plan and manage the feeding industry, and master the preservation and utilization of by product of agriculture industry.
o Knowledgeable in nutrition and feed for master and doctor degree
2. Department of Animal Production
It consists of three (3) programs:
a. Animal Production
The program of animal production is aimed at producing professional engineers with mastery of science and technology of animal husbandry, especially the quality and quantity of developing engineering. They are also educated and trained to develop the analytic and objective patterns on animal production to prepare them for master and doctor degree.
b. Technology of Animal Product
It is aimed at producing professional engineers with mastery of science and technology of animal product, and competence in planning, developing and managing the processing of animal products that derive from the dairy animal, slaughter-animal/beef cattle, and poultry. The programs also prepare the students for master and doctor degree in this major.
c. Sociology Economics of Husbandry
Similar to the two other programs, it is aimed at producing professional engineers with competence in agribusiness management of husbandry, and in developing human resources and communication. The programs provide them with strong basics in Sociology Economics of Husbandry for master and doctor degree.
The faculty is equipped with laboratory, library, feed barn, chopper, grinder, feed mixer, cattle, farm, green house, tractors, and warehouse.
